On Earth, Marcus Vye builds predictive models for Astria and plays at the top of a ranked guild by night — a systems thinker who cannot stop finding the structure under things. He goes by Marcus in both worlds; when the Realm offers him the gamer's instinct to invent a new name, he refuses it. Only the people he lets all the way in get Marc.

His implant — a neuroquantum lattice threaded along the optic nerve — translates the Realm into the only grammar he trusts: health bars, skill trees, loot, levels. It is legible. It is survivable. But the power humming beneath the interface is not code, and it was not built for him. It is ancient, and it is real.

His gift is also his wound. Marcus perceives the Realm with uncanny accuracy and then reaches, every time, for the tidy conclusion — if the prediction is right, understanding is finished. The Realm exists to teach him otherwise: that prediction is not understanding, that observation is not ownership, and that the interface is not the world. It is only his way of surviving contact with it.
